I was reading your article about the new study on mammograms and it mentioned high and low breast cancer risk, how do you know what group you fall in, what’s the criteria?
Your physician can help determine if you are high risk for breast cancer by the following:
- Family history
- Personal history
- Calculating Clausen
- Gail model
Women who are at lower risk for breast cancer typically have:
- No breast cancer family history
- No personal history of breast biopsies
- Do not smoke
- Do not drink heavily
- Exercise
- Are normal body weight
- Are younger
- Do not have BRACA mutation
- Have not had chest radiation
- Have breastfed
- Have had children young
Low risk women can develop breast cancer, but are less likely to and women with healthy lifestyles likely do better if they are diagnosed with breast cancer.
All my best,
Nurse Mary
