Ask the Nurse

I am on Evista (raloxifene) for osteoporosis. Since this is a SERM (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator, also known as as Estrogen Agonist Estrogen Antagonist), can it treat vaginal dryness? Are there any problems taking Evista and Estrace (estradiol) cream at the same time?

Evista/Raloxifene does NOT cause vaginal dryness nor does it treat vaginal dryness or vulvo-vaginal atrophy, also termed “Genital Syndrome of Menopause.” Some SERMS like Osphena (Ospemiphene) and Duavee treat this genital syndrome of menopause.

For women on Evista/Raloxifene, which is a treatment for osteoporosis and also reduces the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer by 50%, they still may need vaginal estrogen like:

So, yes it is OK to use the common combination and of course, you need periodic monitoring with your women’s health physician.
