Ask the Nurse

Can amitriptyline cause stroke or stroke symptoms? I was recently put on amitriptyline for throat spasms. My spasms were severe in my neck and throat area. But amitriptyline has given me terrible side effects - I thought I was having a stroke. I had to go on blood pressure medicine because amitriptyline gave me high blood pressure.

You should see your physician to assess your blood pressure and throat and muscle status, and to determine if you had a stroke and what things you can do to reduce stroke risk.

Causes of stroke include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Hardening of the arteries
  • Bleeding
  • Fibrillation

It sounds like you had a side effect rather than a stroke from the medication.
