Ask the Nurse

My doctor prescribed vaginal inserts to treat vaginal atrophy, but they are too expensive. Are there more natural/herbal, less expensive ways to address the same issue that will truly get results?

There are several prescriptions available for vaginal atrophy:

  1. Vaginal estradiol generically is available for about $15 per tube.
  2. Vaginal DHEA is another option.

In general, herbs are NOT treatments for vaginal atrophy.

You can use olive oil as a moisturizer and lubricant, but it will not restore the integrity of the vaginal tissue. Oral ospemifene/Osphena® is a non-estrogen ORAL option and for Medicare patients when sent to a specialty pharmacy (PRO Care is available for most women). You have to be pro-active in finding less expensive medication options.
