Thanksgiving Turkey

Who says turkey is just for holidays? This is a great and simple way to cook a turkey that comes out perfect every time! This recipe is terrific for entertaining a group because there's no basting and it can cook all afternoon.

Ingredients

Cooking Times

  • 8-12 pounds — 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hours
  • 12-16 pounds — 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 hours
  • 16-20 pounds — 2 3/4 to 3 3/4 hours
  • 24 pounds — 4 1/2 hours

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Remove giblets and neck.
  3. Rinse turkey and pat dry.
  4. Rub with olive oil.
  5. Stuff cavity with heel of bread, celery stalks, one whole onion, peeled and one apple. You may also use fresh sage or rosemary for added flavor.
  6. Wrap turkey in heavy foil two ways — scrunch it, but not airtight. Place in roasting pan 2 inches deep.
  7. Cook at 450 degrees according to size, or until meat thermometer reads 180 to 185. Open foil to brown the last 40 minutes. For easy slicing, cover with foil and let stand after removing from oven for 15 minutes.
