Ask the Nurse

I am a 63 year old white female in excellent health. I drink a powdered, protein supplement in 12 ounces of 1 percent milk daily. Should I be concerned about too much protein in my diet?

It best to get your protein from foods such as the following:

  • eggs
  • fish
  • lean meat
  • milk
  • legumes
  • lentils

If this is a breakfast protein supplement that you add to milk to increase the nutritional content, this is likely fine. If you have kidney failure or insufficiency, then getting too much protein is a concern. After age 2, doctors recommend skim milk as opposed to one percent, two percent or whole milk as one does not need the added fat.
