Ask the Nurse

What can a woman do to feel fresh after having intercourse, since douching is not recommended?

Douching is not recommended as it can cause bacteria to enter the uterus. The vagina is self cleansing and is normally at a lower pH than blood, semen and sweat, which are more alkaline fluids.

A woman can use over-the-counter repHresh vaginal gel (made of lactic acid), which lowers the pH of the vagina and can take care of minor irritations and odor.

If you think you have acquired an infection from sexual activity or have vaginal irritation or abnormal discharge that persists, please see your health care provider for an exam.
