Ask the Nurse

My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with Trichorrhexis Nodosa. Is there a special clinic for this type of diagnosis?

Trichorrhexis Nodosa is a type of hair loss that occurs when the hair itself becomes fragile or brittle. This is usually because of trauma to the hair due to the following:

  • Excessive brushing
  • Heat application
  • Chemical processing
  • Scratching
  • Hairstyles that pull the hair
  • Certain shampoos and straightening agents

A healthy, well balanced diet can promote hair growth. You should talk to your daughter’s pediatrician or dermatologist for more information on treatment options for hair loss and special clinics. In the meantime, hairstyles that reduce tension on the hair may limit further damage.
