Ask the Nurse

Is there a beverage I can make at home that is beneficial to weight loss? I know water is best, but I hear about beverages that can boost weight loss. Is this true? I am healthy otherwise, but overweight.

Water is the best thing for weight loss as long as you don’t have a medical condition that prevents you from drinking too much water. Try drinking your weight in water divided in half ounces. For example, if you weigh 100 pounds, you should drink 50 ounces of water daily.

There is discussion that green tea can be good for weight loss, but there is no scientific evidence to prove this. Some green tea is caffeine free as well.

Tea contains antioxidants which are beneficial for other reasons besides weight loss, so this may be a good alternative to water. You can also try a flavored type of water (as long as it doesn’t have any calories). Personally, I like to add lemon to my water everyday - it adds the perfect amount of flavor to my water!

You may also want to drink a protein shake in the morning to get your day going as breakfast is essential in weight loss.
