Ask the Nurse

My husband recently had a vasectomy. How do we know if the procedure worked?

Men are generally expected to submit semen samples after vasectomy, but many fail to follow up. This is risky, since sperm can remain in the vas deferens above the operative site for weeks or even months after the vasectomy. Your husband will not be considered sterile until post-surgical semen tests, usually performed between eight to 12 weeks after the procedure, show that no sperm remain. Until then, you must continue to use other birth control to prevent pregnancy.
