Ask the Nurse

What is the health risk of Talcum powder near the vagina? What about baby corn starch powder? Can female infants be at risk if baby talcum powder is used on them?

We do not recommend Talcum powder near the genitals in any female as talc particles have been seen in ovarian tumors.

Cornstarch powder can be used, but may increase the risk of minor fungal infections of the skin.

It’s best to keep skin dry, clean and hydrated while avoiding harsh soaps. This should obviate the need to use any powders on the genitals.
