Ask the Nurse

I had a partial hysterectomy and now most of my weight is in my midsection. Is it possible to lose belly fat and make my stomach flat again? What exercises can I do to get rid of the extra weight?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, there are no magic pills to melt belly fat away. Good ol’ diet and exercise are key to having a healthy weight.

Here are some tips to try to help you shed the belly weight:

  • Avoid refined carbs, such as white sugar, sweets, bread and pasta.
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Get at least seven hours of sleep each night.
  • Doing abdominal crunches can help shed belly fat, but you want to make sure you are doing them correctly (so you do not injure your back) and therefore should be done at first in front of a trained fitness instructor or personal trainer.
