I am 51 years old and do not have the urge to have sex. I do not lubricate, and when I do have sex it hurts. Please advise!
Low libido or low desire to have sex, lack of sexual thoughts and fantasies are medically termed Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD). Other etiologies from underlying pathology could also be possibilities, including:
- thyroid disorder
- undiagnosed depression/anxiety
- certain medications
- stressors in life
In your case, since you are over 50 and have dyspareunia it sounds like you may have Vulvo-Vaginal Atrophy (VVA) or Genital Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). This is due to the lack of hormones after menopause in the vagina that can lead to less lubrication, making sex painful. The best way to approach this is to see a women’s health specialist to talk about your options in management, both hormonal and non-hormonal and get a pelvic exam by a women’s health care physician.
