Ask the Nurse

Can you catch Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) from having sexual activity?

Generally speaking, NO as Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is not a sexually transmitted infection. However, situations that affect the healthy bacteria in the vagina and the acidity level of the naturally, self-cleansing vagina may allow for overgrowth of gardnerella bacteria which is associated with BV. Anything that raises the pH of the vagina like blood, sweat and semen may predispose to BV and vaginal yeast infections. Antibiotic use and not washing sex toys may also predispose one to vaginal problems.

Good nutrition, adequate vitamin D and not douching or wearing liners regularly also help the vagina to naturally stay healthy.
