Ask the Nurse

I recently started taking Imvexxy® vaginal estradiol inserts, and I am having stomach cramps, diarrhea and headaches. Are these normal side effects of Imvexxy®?

The Imvexxy® vaginal insert contains very low doses of estrogen. The same is true for other vaginal estrogens. These small doses are usually enough to treat vaginal atrophy and do not increase the level of estrogen beyond existing low postmenopausal range. Therefore I doubt the Imvexxy® is causing your symptoms, and you should contact your PCP for an evaluation and treatment if you are not improved with fluids and a bland diet.
