Ask the Nurse

I am 51 years old and have gained weight and have regular periods. I am always warm and I am experiencing periodic hot flashes. Is this menopause? I have had my thyroid levels checked and they are normal. Could it be something else?

You could be experiencing hot flashes because you are nearing the menopause transition. The average age of menopause is 51.3. Even though you are having regular periods, your hormones could still be fluctuating. Weight gain is something that could be contributing to the hot flashes. Keeping your body mass index in the normal range has been shown to help decrease hot flash symptoms.
