Ask the Nurse

I had my aortic valve replaced in 2015. Everything is normal now, but should I use hormone therapy for heart protection? I am post-menopausal since 2008.

Menopausal hormone therapy is not used for heart valve replacement. Usually, hormone therapy is started within 10 years of menopause. You should see a menopausal specialist to assess the following:

  • menopausal symptoms
  • bone status
  • vaginal, bladder and sexual function
  • cardiac risks factors, including weight
  • waist circumference
  • blood pressure
  • cholesterol rations
  • cancer prevention screening
  • discuss types of hormone therapy and the targets

You can visit menopause.org for a list of certified menopause specialists.
