Ask the Nurse

Do women need to use progesterone for endometrial protection with an intact uterus when using even a small dose of transdermal estrogen (such as vivelle dot)?

Any woman with a uterus should receive progesterone to protect against uterine cancer. Unopposed estrogen without progesterone will cause the lining of your uterus to build up, which can lead to endometrial hyperplasia and cancer. However, progesterone will stabilize the uterine lining and protects against the development of uterine cancer. If estrogen is used systemically, then progesterone must be added to the regimen.
