Ask the Nurse

My wife has chronic kidney disease. Should she avoid whey protein? Is there any protein supplement that she can safely take?

Persons with kidney disease may not be able to ingest extra protein in their diet as that can strain the kidney if there is kidney impairment.

It is best to work with your nephrologist (kidney specialist) and nutritionist to determine a diet composition, the amount of protein and which foods (like vegetables and fruits) contain potassium.
