Ask the Nurse

Are athletic shoes with the rocker soles better for your feet than regular sneakers? I have chronic plantar fasciitis, tendonitis and arthritis. The rocker soles shoes do feel better.

For common foot disorders in women such as osteoarthritis, plantar fasciitis, and bunions, we recommend shoes that have an orthotic foot support. This includes shoes that have supportive arches or wear arch support inserts (orthotics). If you feel more comfortable with rocker soles than this may be fine for you. There are different types of athletic shoes, some have more or less arch support and ankle support.

With age, we lose the fat pads or natural cushions on our heels. Below are 4 tips to help prevent foot pain:

  1. Use wide, low-heeled shoes.
  2. Avoid tight and ill-fitting shoes.
  3. Limit your time wearing fancy high heels.
  4. Always pack a pair of comfortable shoes or sneakers to slip into when you are wearing those stilettos and have to walk for a distance.

Schedule an appointment with your PCP or podiatrist for foot examinations if you have any medical conditions that affect your feet and bring in your shoes to the appointment.
