Ask the Nurse

I inserted vaginal estradiol tablet on Monday and Thursday. In between, can vaginal moisturizers be used?

Yes. Of note, vaginal estrogen (via tablet, insert, cream) is used twice weekly in the vagina as maintenance to help with vaginal dryness and atrophy and urinary symptoms after being used daily for 2 weeks. Over the course of 4-6 weeks, the vaginal estrogen rejuvenates the cells in the vagina, urethra and base of the bladder, as they are all rich in estrogen receptors. Moisturizers can be used to treat dryness symptomatically, but does not help improve the integrity of the tissue.

If you have been on vaginal estradiol tablets for several months without improvement in dryness, speak with your women's health physician regarding alternative treatments, formulations and/or higher doses. As that may be better for you so that you do not require extra moisturizing vaginal products, including the newest therapy a vaginal estradiol insert (IMVEXXY™) which is made with coconut oil/medium chained triglycerides and thus bio-adhesive and naturally moisturizing.
