Ask the Nurse

I am 60 years old and have brittle nails. What could be the cause and what can I do about it? I never had strong nails, however this is worse and I would like to know what’s going on.

Brittle nails can be a sign of the following:

  • Thyroid disorder
  • Nutrition problems
  • Low iron
  • Inadequate, good quality protein intake

Please see your physician for an exam and blood tests.

If you are low in iron (goal ferritin level 50-70), you will need a Gastrointestinal (GI) evaluation for occult blood loss.
