Ask the Nurse

I have an enlarged cyst in my breast that is becoming very painful. Can I have it "biopsied" or aspirated for relief?

Breast cysts can be very painful. A "biopsy" would not be indicated for a benign cyst however, sometimes aspiration of a painful enlarging cyst can provide symptomatic relief.

It is important to remember that even if these cysts are drained, sometimes they can be recurrent and you may eventually elect to get the capsule surgically removed. If you feel this area is increasing in size and pain, it is important that you see your physician for a clinical breast exam and appropriate imaging. Be sure to:

  • Wear a good, supportive bra
  • Avoid excessive caffeine
  • Stop any fish oil supplements
  • Use over the counter asperceme to the area of breast tenderness, if necessary
