Ask the Nurse

I have been taking biotin for several months and have just read the article about how biotin supplements can affect lab tests. Should I be concerned about this?

The FDA has issued a warning regarding biotin’s interference with certain labs. It can cause the labs to appear falsely high or low. This usually occurs when biotin is taken at exceedingly high doses. Check the labels on your supplement to see how much biotin they contain. The daily recommended dose is up to 35mcg. If you are getting labs drawn then you should stop the biotin 3 days before the test. For more information regarding the effects of biotin on labs please visit speakingofwomenshealth.com.
