Vitamins Question Archive:

Question:

I have a friend who is about 50 years old. She is currently taking vitamins that state that they support healthy cellular response, repair and regeneration. The claim is that as we age, celular renewal can slow or be compromised by oxidative damage to celular DNA.The basic ingredients seem to be a claim of using discovering and developing the world's highest-quality therapeutic-grade essential oil products.

The products are distributed by independent product consultants who working from home, introduce, educate, and sell the product. They have a skin care line, hair care, wellness (the vitamins), weight loss, and digestive health as part of this program. What do you think?! I have suggested she save her money because it is very expensive.

Question:

Cleveland Clinic doctor, Dr. Marc Gillinov, was on TV this morning and he stated that all vitamins and supplements like calcium, vitamin D and omega 3, are unnecessary.

I am confused as I have been told by my primary care doctor to take a multivitamin, vitamin d and omega 3. I do not eat fish more than once or twice a month. Should I discontinue taking my multivitamin and supplements?

Question:

It is always suggested that people eat five vegetables/fruits a day and to eat nuts as a healthy snack. I enjoy reading about health and nutritional issues, but it is very frustrating that food limitations are rarely addressed. I am limited in my intake of fiber rich foods, so I can't follow the typical recommendations. My doctor has suggested these restrictions and, of course, I follow them. I take a multi-vitamin and calcium supplements.

What is your opinion regarding chewy supplements vs. tablets? Thank you!

Question:

I am 42 years old and I don’t have any health problems, but I have had some joint pain in my hip area.  I read an article that taking an Omega-3 supplement would help with some joint pain.

However, I am allergic to fish and shellfish (I am able to eat canned fish and tuna).  Is it safe to take the Omega-3 supplement with my fish allergy?
