I’m pregnant and people keep telling me to stop drinking out of plastic water bottles. What’s the problem with them?

Many toxins are known to pass from the mother through the placenta to the developing infant. It’s important to eliminate your exposure to toxins during pregnancy.

Hard plastic bottles often contain bisphenol-A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor that, in more than 900 studies, has been linked to serious health problems in children and adults. It is particularly devastating to infants and young children, and can lead to changes in brain and reproductive system development in utero.

When drinking from plastic bottles, look for the number 2 or 4 in the triangle on the bottom of the bottle. Steer clear of numbers 3, 6, 7, 8, or 9. A 1 is acceptable, but not reusable, so don’t refill a number 1 bottle. The inside lining of many cans contains BPA, as well. When buying canned goods, look for products with a “BPA-free” label.
