Ask the Nurse

I have an overactive bladder and I do not want to take medications. I just joined a gym and I have been drinking the recommended measure of water each day. Is there any tip to help me NOT have to urinate so frequently?

Kegel exercises are good exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles, and depending on the cause of your symptoms might be helpful. Also, try to avoid bladder irritants like:

  • coffee
  • caffeinated drinks
  • alcohol beverages
  • chocolate
  • smoking

Try eliminating these irritants from your diet and see if it helps.

I also recommend that you follow up with your primary physician because other causes like infection need to be ruled out. Your physician can also discuss non-pharmacologic ways to help control your urinary incontinence symptoms.
